Don't Call Me a Legend
[6467-1]
Charlie Vaughn learned to fly the hard way. He paid for lessons with money saved from working on the family farm and parlayed them into one of the most fascinating careers in flying. “I hitchhiked 25 miles to the nearest flying school for each lesson. I couldn’t take the bus because then I wouldn’t have had enough money to fly. I went solo in six hours and ten minutes but it took a year.” It would be another year before Charlie completed the course. Five years later, he earned a Commercial Pilot Licence. Over the next 45 years, Charlie would fly 13,000 hours in a huge variety of aircraft from a Kinner-powered Rearwin Sportster to a 50-passenger de Havilland Dash 8. Charlie has made 68 crossings of the Atlantic Ocean in small and medium-sized aircraft. He has flown the Pacific five times and gone completely around the world nine times. Don’t Call Me a Legend is the tale of how the farm boy ferry pilot has battled bad weather, mechanical failures, bureaucratic red tape, heat, cold and exhaustion to survive where others have failed. Fly with Charlie as he delivers a Cessna Skymaster to Botswana, a Twin Otter across the Pacific and a Hawker Siddeley 748 through Russia. If you love adventure, you won’t be disappointed.
